In 1973 a cargo plane was flying towards the military base in Keflavík when they started to have some problems and in the end, had to make an emergency landing on the black sand beach at Sólheimasandur, the crew was ok.
At the time the plane was already an old one so they took what they could use and left the wreck on the black sand beach. For many years the plane wreck was the home of a Raven family where the cockpit was a perfect place for the nest. At some point, the plane wreck got attention and is today one of the main attractions in south Iceland.
