Kvernufoss Waterfall

Kvernufoss Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in South Iceland. It is still a place where you can not expect to meet too many people but it is getting more and more popular. It was my playground when I grow up in Skógar many years ago and one of my favourite places in the area.

The waterfall is about 30 meters high and surrounded by cliffs on both sides. Kvernufoss is located east of Skógar (not far from the waterfall Skógafoss). The waterfall is inside a small canyon call Kvernugil. It has steep hills on both sides and is beautiful to walk through.

Directions: You park your car by the amazing Museum in Skógar if you have time I recommend a visit to the Museum before or after your visit to Kvernufoss. From the parking, you walk east beneath the hill to the river Kverna (about 5 min walk). From there you follow the river upstream into the canyon until you reach the waterfall. It is possible to walk behind the waterfall but be careful if you do the rock above can be unstable so please be careful.
